Valentines Day Burlap Banner

23 Jan Valentines Day "Be Mine" Burlap Banner

Valentine’s Day is in the air!  I love seeing everyone’s cute ideas out in blogland on their various Valentine Day projects. So many sweet receipes, crafts and cards to create!   I am a complete girly girl so all the pink hearts, flowers, chocolate and glitter gets me all excited!   I am working on romancing my mantle up a bit and thought the best place to start was with a festive banner.

Valentines Day "Be Mine" Burlap Banner

This “Be Mine” one is my favorite.  I told my Valentine I made it just for him… he rolled his eyes ;)

I had some red and natural colored burlap left over from Christmas so I used that to cut out the pennant shapes, which are strung with a lace trim.   For these with the red glitter letters, I used my silhouette to cut out letters on double-sided adhesive, secured on the burlap, and glittered it up.

 Valentines Day Burlap "Love" Banner

For this banner, instead of using red glitter letters I created a stencil with my silhouette and stenciled the letters in with black paint.

I just LOVE how they all turned out! So cute! I kept one and gave one to each of my sisters.   If you want one, then you can purchase one at my Etsy shop here.

Until next time, friends!

Rainbow Layer Cake

14 Jan rainbow14

Need a little color on a gloomy Monday?  This 6 layer Rainbow cake will definitely bring some happiness into your day!  Isn’t it so fun?

Rainbow Cake

I made this cake for my daughter’s 2nd Birthday, she had a rainbow party.  It was a huge hit!

Here’s What’cha Need:

  •  2 boxes of white cake mix
  • 4 eggs
  • 3/4 cup oil
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 container of vanilla yogurt
  • 3 – 4 containers of vanilla / marshmallow icing
  • food coloring

Here’s What’cha Do:

  • Pre heat oven to 350″ and grease 8 or 9 inch round pans
  • Combine cake mix, eggs, oil, water and yogurt together for about 2 minutes or until combined.
  • Divide cake batter evenly into 6 bowls
  • Add desired amount of food coloring into each bowl until you reach the color you like
  • Bake each layer of cake for about 11-13 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean. Repeat until all colors are baked.
  • Cool completely. Wrap in plastic wrap and freeze.  I kept mine in the freezer overnight.
  • When you are ready to frost the cake, unwrap each layer, spread icing on the top and place another layer of cake on top, spread icing, and repeat until you have all your layers.
  • Now is the time to get generous and spread that icing thick.  Slop that sugar on all over the cake to completely cover  any gaps in-between the layers of cake.  The icing will help hold it all upright and secure the cakes in place so they won’t break when thawed.

And there you have it.  Such a bright, fun and cute cake!  I decorated mine with skittles.  I had visions of a pom pom banner across the cake, but time was not on my side that day.  Once you cut into the cake, all them”oohs and ahhs”  will take over and no one is paying attention to the outside anyways!

The possibilities with this cake are endless! You could do it in pink ombre for Valentines Day or green for St. Patrick’s or red white and blue for 4th of July.  So many ways to personalize it to your special occasion.  And not only is it super cute, but I love the flavor that the vanilla yogurt adds while also making the cake super moist.

Send me some pics if you make it, I would love to see! Until next time,  friends!

Pumpkin Donuts

23 Nov Pumpkin Donuts

Nothing says fall to me like pumpkins! I love everything about them… carving, decorating, pumpkin scented candles… and I especially love the pumpkin flavored foods during fall time!  When tweenie was a little boy we used to go to this one pumpkin farm that always made home made pumpkin donuts and fresh apple cider.  You could watch them fry the donuts fresh and set them out with the glaze still dripping and the donut deliciously warm.  So when I saw this recipe for Glazed Pumpkin Donuts here at Barefoot and Baking, I knew I had to try them!

It was just three of us the night I made these, so I cut the recipe in half.  It still made about a dozen donuts, which was more than enough for us.  They were sooo good when they were all done and still warm with the glaze dripping.

Can’t get enough pumpkin! Yum!!  Pretty good result for my first donut making experience!   Hope you guys have a great week and a had a very Happy Thanksgiving.  Until next time, friends.

Monster Eye Ball Truffles

28 Oct eyeballs

Hey ya’ll!  Hope you had a great weekend!  Our weekend was good… yesterday we had tweenie’s football game and then headed to the store to stock up for Hurricane Sandy.   Today I picked up all my Halloween decorations outside and my flower pots so nothing will break or blow away in the storm.   Then before it got too windy we headed down to a local corn maze and got lost in some fall fun!  Corn mazes and pumpkin farms are my absolute favorite fall activity.  And what’s even better? Tilly walked the whole maze and now has been passed out for almost 3 hours.  Happy Sunday to me!!

Since this dang hurricane is going to be bringing the tricks I thought I would share some yummy Halloween treats!  Aren’t these Monster Eye Ball Truffles the cutest?

These frightfully fantastic truffles are made from the same recipe as a previous post Mint Chocolate Oreo Truffles .  But actually this time I didn’t make them with mint, I just doubled the Oreos.

I dipped the truffles into green dipping chocolate and placed a white chocolate wafer in the center of each ball and a some blue colored white melting chocolate in the center of the eye ball.    Very easy, and ends up being a cute, fun treat that the kiddos are going to love!

 Until next time, friends!

Amaretto Finger Cookies

28 Oct Amaretto Finger Cookies

Wow! I can’t belive it is almost the end of October and I this is my first post!  I have been pretty busy this month so even though I have been creating all sorts of goodies, I haven’t had the time to review my pictures and write up a post.  The days go by so quick!  I am all hyped up on Halloween candy so I thought it was a perfect time to catch you up on some of the Halloween goodies that I have been making lately… starting off with this recipe for some wickedly delicious Amaretto Finger Cookies.

Here’s What’cha Need:

  • 2 sticks unsalted butter
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2  & 3/4 cups of flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp. Amaretto
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • sliced almonds
  • Red decorating gel

Here’s What’cha Do:

  • In a large bowl, cream together the butter and the sugar.  Add egg, vanilla and amaretto.
  • In another bowl mix together flour, salt and baking powder.  Add to wet mixture slowly. Combine.
  • Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour
  • Roll into balls (about 1 to 1 1/2 inches) and then roll into a finger shape (about 1/2 in x 3 in).  Make them as thick, thin, long as you want.
  • Place on cookie sheet, 2 inches apart.  Use butter knife to make line indents for knuckles and also press tip downat end to create a nail bed)
  • Bake at 325 degrees for about 20 minutes.  Cool on pan for 2 minutes and then transfer to cooling rack.
  • Adda dab of red decorating gel to nail bed, then place a sliced almond on top for the nail.

And THAT is finger lickin’ good!  hehe!   Until next time, friends!

Summer Pool Party

27 Jun pool3.jpg

How did your first official first week of summer treat ya?  My week was fantastic!  Had a girls night out, went yard sale’n & shopping with the hubby, spent time poolside with the kiddos and the icing on it all… I got to help with two parties!!  It was a busy weekend filled with all kinds of crafting and cooking goodies!   I am very excited to share with you everything that I have been working on.

My teenage beauty helped her BFF host a pool party to kick off the summer and asked if I could “donate” to the cause.  All she has to say is party and she knows that I’m in.  My mind starting going crazy with all kinds of ideas, but I had promised to keep it simple.   And really, a bunch of teenagers running around in their swimsuits really don’t care how I decorate the cupcakes do they??  Nah, they just want lots of snacks and to be left alone.  Here are a few pictures that I was able to snip  for you before I got kicked out…

For the decorations the girls placed tiki torches around the pool and hung up paper lanterns.  We love paper lanterns, they are pretty much at every party that we have.  They busted out all the rafts, beach balls and floating toys that they could find.  The table was covered with a pink polka dot table-cloth and some of the serving dishes were  embellished  with flip-flop patterned ribbon.  The girls bought the long pink cups themselves and embellished them with gems, ribbon and other things… or as Taylor called it, “Be Dazzled!” They turned out really cute, she so creative!

We served an assortment of chips served in beach buckets, blue jello (with Swedish fish inside), Nutter Butter flip clip cookies, goldfish crackers served in paper cones made from cardstock and cupcakes.  The cupcakes were iced blue and then coated with crushed graham crackers to resemble sand.  I topped them off with a little umbrella.  For drinks we had sodas, lemonade and water bottles covered with blue  flower pattered duck tape.

I wanted to do more, I could do more… it was killing me NOT to do more… but teenagers don’t dig cutesy so there was only so much I could get away with.   :)

Hope you’re enjoying your summer too!

Father’s Day Crab Feast

13 Jun banner5

Last year we had both of our dads over for a Father’s Day Maryland Style Crab Feast.  My brother-in-law goes crabbing and always gets the best, biggest, tastiest Maryland Blue Crabs.  I went ahead with the crab theme for the party and chose red, white and blue for my color palate.

The table was covered with a red plaid table-cloth and a fishing net was draped over top as an overlay.  I placed boxes underneath the table-cloth to create different heights.   The crab theme was carried out here as well with a crab wine bottle holder on the table as well as crab mallets in mason jars with red polka-dotted ribbon.  Some red, white and blue pinwheels and starfish were scattered around the table.  Doesn’t look like I have a good picture of it, but for my centerpiece I cut blue hydrangea from my brother in law’s house, they were so full and gorgeous!  Hydrangeas are my favorite flowers!

The father’s day banner I made was cute and pretty simple to make.  I used red, white and blue construction paper, ribbon, glue stick, hole punch and scissors.  First I printed off “Happy Father’s Day” and a couple of crab images.  Cut out, glue to poster board, cut out, punch hole in top, thread ribbon through and hung.

Your guest of honor will love his personalized banner! Who wouldn’t?

I kept the outdoor decorations pretty simple.  Blue plastic table cloths as a base layer and red polka-dotted wrapping paper was ran across the top.  Gotta love the Target dollar section!  The wrapping paper made for easy clean up with the crabs, so not only was it super cute, but functional!  When hubby saw it he told me it was too fancy, and over the top. Really? Some $1 wrapping paper?  Such a simple man, he is so easy to please and impress, I love it! :)   Blue plastic buckets and mason jars with crab mallets were placed on the tables for the guests as well as patriotic citronella candles, to keep those pesky bugs away.  And to top the look off… what’s a party without paper lanterns?!?! Not a good one, so I hung a couple of red and blue ones for fun.

I served punch, tea and root beer. I got this cute printable from www.Nothingbutcountry.com for the Root Beer. It says “You are an AWesome Dad” but looks like the logo for A&W Rootbeer. Very cute.

I also got this idea for the fish cupcakes from www.nothingbutcountry.com as well.  I just love their site, it is full of all sorts of cute crafty ideas.

First you will need to prep, bake and cool your cupcakes per the recipe.  As  you are doing this step, you can prep your little fishing poles.  For this you will need wooden sticks (I used skewer sticks cut in half), string, a needle, fish gummies and a little bit of glue.  First wrap the string around your skewer, you cane hold it in place with a little dab of glue.  With the other end of your string, thread a needed though it and then thread that through your fish’s mouth.   I found that if you use a really big needle then it will go through the gummy easier than a regular sized needle.  Tie a little tie and place down carefully so it doesn’t get all tied up in a mess.  That happened to me with a few and I had to do them over.

When you have all of your poles prepped and your cupcakes are finished cooling, then you are ready to frost them.   Just add a few drops of blue food coloring to your frosting and pipe onto the cupcakes.

Insert your fishing pole in your cupcake and your done, a sweet treat for your favorite fisherman.

We had a great time celebrating Father’s Day with our Crab Feast…  succulent crabs, great weather, fantastic company and cold beer…. an awesome day to celebrate a couple of awesome dads!

Happy Father’s Day!

Hamburger Cupcakes

30 May Hamburger Cupcakes

Happy Memorial Day!  What a beautiful weekend it was to give thanks to our American soldiers and to celebrate our country!  The weather was gorgeous, the food was scrumptious and the drinks overflowing.   Memorial Day weekend is always a time for us to hang out with friends, enjoy the outdoors, and eat good food.   And the food of choice… hamburgers and hotdogs on the grill.    There is nothing better than your first cookout of the season and enjoying all the BBQ fixings and foods…YUMMMMY!    Since burgers are a popular go-to food to kick off the summer with… and since a party isn’t complete without a sweet treat…I combined the two and made these tasty, charming,  All American Hamburger Cupcakes!

Aren’t they so cute??   I saw this idea on The Martha Stewart Show last year and thought it would be a fun goodie to bring along with us to a  pool party.

First you bake brownies (I used a box mix and baked in a 11×9 bar pan lined with tin foil) and yellow cupcakes (I made 15 regular cupcakes and 18 mini cupcakes).  Cool completely, and then cool some more, then cut in half to make a bun.  Use a circle cookie cutter and cut out your hamburger patties from the brownies.    In a plastic bag, mix 1  cup of coconut and a couple of drops of green food coloring together to tint the coconut for the lettuce.   For the ketchup and mustard you can use  pre-colored frosting or white icing tinted with foot coloring.  Spread over the top of your burger to resemble ketchup and mustard.   To finish the look off, add some sesame seeds to your buns.  Brushing water on the bun first, helps the sesame seeds stick to the bun.   And there you have it… an  adorable, sweet  little  hamburger!

These were pretty simple and fun to make, not to mention pretty darn good too!   Did you make any special goodies for your Memorial Day celebration?  Leave a comment or find me on Facebook to share pics of your goodies!

Happy Memorial Day!

Moss Covered Bird’s Nests with Embellished Eggs

11 Apr nest5

A sure sign that spring is in bloom is to be able to hear the lovely songs of the birds.  My toddler is fascinated by birds, she is constantly pointing them out and hearing even the faintest of chirps.  The love of animals and nature is in her blood, her daddy is the most enthusiastic outdoorsman that I have ever met.   To only be 15 months and already trying to call ducks, owls and whippoorwills… well, there is no mistaken where she comes from!

At my sister’s house for our monthly craft date, I started working on my Easter Egg Topiary, but it took me an hour to just decorate three eggs!  One egg has lace and flower embellishments hot glued on, another is covered with sequins and the last one (my favorite) is wrapped in a beaded necklace.   I think they all turned out cute!

My eggs needed a home, so I set out to make a nest.   I used the catch basin of a 1 gallon terra-cotta pot and hot glued moss all over it.  With the moss covering the entire piece, it really looked like a nest, it was the perfect shape!    I think I will make another one to put my Yarn Wrapped Easter Eggs in!

Here is my nest and eggs surrounded by my love birds on my entry way table, along with my Easter Egg Topiary. Welcome spring!

Yarn Wrapped Easter Eggs

4 Apr Yarn Wrapped Eggs

I just love springtime, it has to be my favorite season of the year!   I love all of the fresh blooms, the excitement that the first warm days bring, the sun setting later so we can have more time to play outside… and I especially love all of the spring and Easter decor.   Everything is so happy, bright and new… such a refreshing break from the winter gloom.

I made some Yarn Wrapped Easter Eggs the other night that I wanted to show you.   Aren’t they cute?

This project was a little more time-consuming than I anticipated, but I really like the look of the eggs so it was worth it.  All you will need is some plastic eggs, yarn and glue.  I started by putting a little glue around the egg  (this helped keep the yarn in place so it didn’t slide around everywhere).  Then I just sat back, caught up on my shows  and wrapped the yarn around the eggs until the plastic egg was completely covered.

I still have some green and blue yarn that I want to make more eggs out of.  I think I may put them on a wreath… but if not I am happy with these little beauties sitting in a bowl looking pretty and festive!
